Supreme Court Seeks Response on Alleged Ponzi Scheme by Coimbatore-Based Firm

The Supreme Court of India has sought responses from the Union Government and the Government of Tamil Nadu on a plea filed by a group of depositors seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into an alleged Ponzi scheme operated by Universal Trading Solutions Private Limited, a Coimbatore-based company.

The petitioners have alleged that the company collected large sums of money from thousands of investors across multiple States by promising high and assured returns, but subsequently defaulted on repayments. The plea contends that the alleged fraudulent activities span several States and involve a substantial amount of public money, thereby warranting investigation by a central agency.

The Supreme Court issued notice to the Centre and the State of Tamil Nadu and has sought their response on the demand for a CBI investigation. The matter is expected to be taken up for further consideration after replies are filed.

Supreme Court to Hear Kuldeep Singh Sengar’s Bail Plea in Custodial Death Case

The Supreme Court will take up on Monday the bail petition filed by former Uttar Pradesh MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who is serving a sentence in connection with the custodial death of the father of the Unnao rape survivor.

Sengar has approached the apex court seeking bail after the Delhi High Court recently refused to suspend his sentence in the custodial death case. The case pertains to the death of the survivor’s father in judicial custody in 2018, for which Sengar was later convicted and sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment.

The bail plea is listed before a Bench headed by the Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant. The Supreme Court is expected to examine whether Sengar has made out a case for interim relief, considering the nature of the offence, the findings of the trial court, and the earlier refusal of relief by the High Court.

Sengar is already serving a separate life sentence in the Unnao rape case, in which the Supreme Court has previously intervened to ensure fair trial and victim protection.
